Religious Freedom Convocation
Paul, Shelly, and I attended the Religious Freedom Convocation last night…
The Rev. Eugene Rivers III, a leader in the largest conference of black churches in the United States, and Elder Lance B. Wickman, an emeritus general authority for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, were the speakers.
Rev. Rivers attended our sacrament meeting yesterday with Mike Leavitt and his wife. We had our Primary Program for our service and I could tell the good reverend was charmed by the children testifying of Christ with every talk and song.
A few of the Leavitt grandchildren are in our ward, so I am certain that is why the Leavitt clan chose to attend.
The convocation was simply excellent. The music stupendous and the spirit of the crowd fired up and positive.
I am determined to find the well modulated tone in standing up for religious freedom. Sometimes I am too belligerent and confrontational to be effective when chatting with those who would love for Mormons to drop dead. The final challenge of the evening was from Elder Wickman who encouraged us to speak up and be willing to talk to our non religious brothers and sisters. I suppose my “Throwdown” post from the past few days was too confrontational and negative.
How to find the words that allow for defending my faith on the web without being a hater? So far it has proven somewhat elusive, but I am determined to do better.
